CTACS General Meeting for February 18, 2008

The ctacs attendees Keith Sterzing, Chris Boas, John Herron, Mark Thomas, Charlie Boas, David Williams, and George Wyche (not shown). Sorry for the rotten picture. This broken camera has a trigger that snaps when you push meaning I fail to  s q u e e z e  off a picture. And any place with a white area turns saturated, invading nearby pixels. However, I start a nice paying full time job on March 23, so the April meeting may benefit from a replacement camera.

We worked with Keith after eating and drinking and carousing.

Mark Thomas and I were taken aback with the operation speed. Matters were complicated because Keith's monitor was defective. We wasted time investigating that. We found a bent video connector pin touching another pin. We straightened it (with difficulty), but the monitor was missing red (and some other minor problems).

Keith has thousands of email, many are of value to him. We begged him to exercise more responsibility and moving inbox email to separate boxes with names picked by him.

We tried quick answers by TRYING to look at index numbers versus dates and the like, but we could not see any pattern (especially given the slow action). YAM operations could not be interrupted. We were forced to reboot more than once just to get control.

We kicked Chris Boas off the AmigaOne and used its monitor... essentially starting over. We hit upon the idea of running an ARexx script which promised to delete duplicated email. We seemingly launched it, but after 5 minutes there was no visible action. We examined the script and realized that it would not report anything, only do the job. We added some progress messages to it and then wringed our hands over what state interrupting the program would leave YAM. Hell, we could not even tell if the damn script was running until we made the changes!

Reboot. ANOTHER 5 minutes for YAM to open. The script reported it was running, but after 20 minutes it had not found any duplicates... then Keith said he really did have a bit more to do before going to work at 11pm so we had to quit, having resolved very little.

I wanted to delete email indices and let YAM rebuild them, but we had no idea how long that would take (with the relatively little time left).
